What the archives tell us. Nine unfinished projects by Jacques Dupuis (Quaregnon, 1914 - Mons, 1984)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article introduces a series of projects from the archive of Jacques Dupuis, an important figure in modern Belgian architecture. Constituted by Maurizio Cohen and Jan Thomaes, this collection and the documents it contains are on deposit at the ULB archives. This selection of nine unfinished projects illustrates Dupuis's creative vitality, his ability to handle geometry and spatial invention, and his avant-garde spirit. It is also a journey through different typologies and scales. Showing unfinished projects highlights the research that goes into drafting architectural designs. This questioning helps to focus the nature of architectural practice, and the need to combine practical and programmatic requirements with the art of composing spaces and giving them quality. While the notion of quality is sometimes difficult to define, in Dupuis's case the richness of the plans draws us into his vision, into his desire to offer users a world full of fantasy, free from convention and banality.
